The WPT Bay 101 Shooting Star was full of famous names of the poker world, including Phil Ivey, Howard Lederer, Kara Scott, Daniel Negreanu and Phil Hellmuth. After five days of play, it was Alan Sternberg who claimed the first prize of $1,039,000 and the title, defeating a field of 415 poker players.
The final table started on Friday, with only Mike Sexton and Mike Matusow representing the “shooting stars”. The table was completed with Alan Sternberg, Vivek Rajkumar, Steven Kelly and Casey McCarrel. Sexton was eliminated in sixth place with a prize of $148,000, while McCarry went home in sixth place with $221,800.
The next player to leave the poker table was Rajkumar with a prize of $295,800, followed by Matusow who took home a prize of $369,800 but could not make it to the final heads-up. Kelly and Sternberg were left to play for the first place and Kelly finished in second position with a consolation prize of $595,300.
“I came in feeling pretty comfortable with my position, but my seat draw was not good," Alan Sternberg commented. "I had a plan and I stuck to it and it worked out really well. It was an honor to play with Mike Sexton. Mike Matusow is interesting to play with. This was my 4th WPT tournament, but I never cashed.”
